Cooking with an induction cooktop or range is simply the best way to cook. Used in both professional kitchens and family homes, induction cooking is faster and more energy efficient than a traditional cooktop. Unlike other forms of heating, induction heat is generated directly in the pot or pan by an alternating current, as opposed to being generated in the stovetop by electrical coils or burning gas. The surface of the cooktop creates no heat itself, which also makes it a safe option. Induction cooktops are easy to clean because their surface is flat and spilled food does not burn on it.

The pyrolytic function takes all the hard work out of cleaning an oven. When you select this function, the oven temperature is raised to approximately 500°C for up to two hours. This ensures all food and grease residue is burned off, with only a little residue of ash left to sweep away. The oven cavity is left spotlessly clean. For safety during use, the pyrolytic control securely locks the oven door, and only releases the lock once the temperature drops below 300°C. Because pyrolytic ovens are well insulated, efficiency is assured.

Steam ovens and combination steam ovens are very popular for a number of reasons. They are simple to operate and can be used for a wide variety of cooking requirements. They also offer a healthy alternative to conventional cooking. Steam cooks food quickly while retaining its nutrients, colour and flavour. It also keeps food moist, which makes it well suited to cooking seafood and fish. Vegetables also are particularly suited to steam cooking.

Appliance manufacturers have introduced a number of new technologies to refrigerators in the past few years. These include energy-efficient features, high-performance cooling systems and intuitive technology that continually adjusts settings within the refrigerator to keep food fresh for longer. Ice-and-water dispensers, humidity-controlled crispers and space-saving interior design features are also standard on many models.

What are the benefits of a side-by-side fridge-freezer?
Side-by-side models are particularly popular fridge-freezer combinations, providing easy access to fresh and frozen foods. Ergonomics aside, they are also appreciated for their streamlined aesthetics and functionality. Many models come with an ice and water dispenser and a filtered water dispenser.

A refrigerator drawer can be positioned beneath a benchtop wherever it is needed – beside the food preparation area or to provide a drinks fridge just outside the main kitchen work zone. Flexibility is a key feature of fridge-freezer drawers. They can be programmed to chill food like a standard refrigerator, or to operate as a freezer. Other programmes, which can be changed at the touch of a button, include wine and pantry settings. Refrigerator drawers are also ergonomic, as there is no need to bend to access items.

Load-sensing technology is an energy-saving feature. Rather than using a set amount of water each time the dishwasher runs, load-sensing technology determines how much water is needed for each load, making each wash more energy efficient while still ensuring high performance.

A noisy dishwasher is sure to take the shine off a dinner party. Today, however, appliance manufacturers are focused on creating the quiet kitchen, especially as kitchens are likely to be part of an open-plan living space. Modern dishwashers are generally much quieter than those of previous generations. Some models have an Extra Quiet programme that ensures the noise of the dishwasher is hardly perceptible.

One of the first considerations before you start looking is space – can you place your washer and dryer side by side or will they need to be stacked? You will also need to consider the size of your average wash, so you don’t under- or over-estimate your load requirements. Once these considerations have been addressed, you can decide what features are important to you. For example, energy- and water-saving settings may be a priority. You might prefer an intuitive washer that will automatically adjust loads and settings to provide the best performance. Do you need lots of different fabric settings? Or an extra-quiet machine?
You will also need to consider possible venting options for a dryer. If no venting is possible, you might require a condenser dryer, which extracts moisture from the clothes and features a pull-out water container.
Kitchen Things consultants can help you determine the best washer and dryer for your needs.
